At the time of the Advantage launch, ASDA were offering one (or more?) of each variant as a competition prize.

For every £20(?) you spent, you were given a sticker representing a jigsaw piece of an Advantage. You stuck these on a collector card, and if you succeeded in collecting all of them (8 IIRC) you won that particular model. (No cut and shuts were allowed, so nobody could win a Mestrego, before any of you ask )

Needless to say, one particular piece had a very small print run, thus restricting the number of cars available to win.

I used to own a montego advantage in the mid 1990s a rare black one bought it from an auction 1990 h reg was a swan national rental car before I bought it had 79 000 on clock when I bought it only 4 years old kept it for 5 years what a car it was super hit to say it was non turbo lovely fast luxury piece of motoring wish I’d never sold it unfortunately my job change and I was doing more miles a day to and from work a 37 mile round trip 6 days a week made it no longer economical to run at only 25 mpg swapped it for a Ford Orion diesel but was never the same as the montego what made it super rare was the fact that at the time of it coming off the production line being one of only 1400 built rover had just stopped making them and ran out of the advantage decals to put on boot and bottoms of front doors so the only proof of it being an advantage was the advantage embroidered into the seats and having the mg turbo style spoilers and the white 15 inch alloy wheels on of course the log book it could shift though used to do 120 mph on the motorway at night if you weren’t watching your speed so comfortable to drive and powerful

I had a rare black montego advantage in the mid 90s up until 1998 and it was a beast of a car so comfortable and quick on the roads I wish I had kept it now however I have been trying to find it as the dvla website shows it as still alive but not been taxed or motd since November 1998,it’s not been sworn off road .i have this horrible feeling some one has stashed it away and it’s rotting away somewhere .registration was H591BNC I BELEIVE IT WAS THE LAST ONE TO BE PRODUCED ,A DEALER TOLD ME THIS AS IT HAD THE ADVANTAGE DECALS MISSING ON THE OUTSIDE PANELS,WAS TOLD THEY RAN OUT OF DECALS BEFORE IT CAME OFF THE LINE AND DECIDED THAT IT WOULD BE TOO EXPENSIVE TO RUN A FULL BATCH OFF FOR THE SAKE OF ONE CAR,I WAS ONLY THE CARS SECOND OWNER FIRST BEING SWAN NATIONAL CAR HIRE,IT HAD 70 thousand on the clock when I bought it,by the time I swapped it,it was touching 95thousand but still ran well ,when I swapped the dealers put it on the front of the forciurt only to come in next morning with I propped up on bricks somebody had nicke the 15 inch white trade mark alloy wheels which had just had brand new low profile tyres two days before

How Many Left reckon there are 4 SORN and none on the road. I remember they looked really good. Ford did an Escort Eclipse around the same time. My pal bought one and let me drive it - 1300CVH in a similar cherry red. I was driving my mums MG Montego EFI at the time. I was horrified by how weedy the Escort was!

I bet a black Advantage would look the business. Never seen one though.

There are two known green Montego Advantages. My old one that I had some paintwork done on and has a replacement decal made on the boot lid, as per picture. I also had to replace the fuel pump which the previous owner didn't tell me stopped working when hot and re-did the headlining. I sold mine to Mike Owen after it was displayed at the NEC and he sold it soon after to a guy who used it as his everyday car in the south of England. The other one used to be in Wales but not seen for quite awhile. I did know of a black one that came up a few years ago for sale without any decals so it might even be your car David, was a while ago now though.
