Garage found that my s series engine is pouring out oil and antifreeze the engine is knackered one on eBay item number 226153098528 don't know if is a manual or auto the seller does not know
Surely the only difference is the flywheel etc and as you've still got your old engine and gearbox etc you should be able to swap them over ?
1958 Ford Consul Convertible. I love this car
1965 Ford Zodiac Executive. Fab cruiser being restored

2004 MGZT cdti. Great workhorse
2004 MGZT V8. Black now with new engine and gearbox
If i might butt in with some info. (i need to get out more) Jeff please confirm or deny as it's a lot of money to commit to if i'm wrong. Engine Code BHM 1498E isn't listed in my Montego Microfiche but BHM 1498N is. "N" being new and "E" being exchange. BHM1498N is listed as "engine unit-stripped-manual-HC". The engine code changes from vehicle No 464731 on. This looks to be engine number 212750. The engine code for automatic is BHM 1519N. Having checked there appears to be only one crankshaft for manuals or autos but others may know why the engines have different codes for manual and automatic. Maybe there are different drillings for the gearbox plates? There is a caveat in that the microfiche shows what i would call a "short engine" i.e without cylinder head. So is the engine code BHM 1498E label refer to it as it was before or after reconditioning? Hope this hasn't confused matters but as Jeff said you can use your manual gearbox setup during the swap but i understand your caution before proceeding. Is your Maestro pre Nov 1988? If not there may be other issues to consider.

Strange but true BHM 1498E is mentioned on the Maestro microfiche, looks to be the same spec: manual, high compression, leaded fuel. When best of British were flogging the gold seal engines off there were some unleaded ones among them, but not sure if any of the people that bought them will be selling them..
The engine number on my maestro is 18HE56100938 date of first registration is 01/08/1989
1600 engine number should start with 16, the H means transverse E56 means mechanical fuel pump, negative earth alternator, pre engaged starter, R2 requirements (no idea what that means!), Automatic gearbox, thin wall electrical cables, new type breather system, 1989 model year (unleaded) and a rather weird one, 1986 model year...I guess this may be a typo on the microfiche, but that's what it says! the 100938 is the number, so I guess yours is the 938th of that spec. The BHM 1498 E number is a part number for replacement engine & not directly related to engine number. As Jeff says, you should be able to make it fit using your existing parts (with the possible exception of the crankcase breather), but you will need to use lead replacement additive. Do you know what exactly is wrong with your engine?
Cylinder head is warped pouring out oil on side by timing belt losing coolant big time they failed the mot because oil was leaking excessively they cant get the head off because the bolt are corroded so bad they said they will snap inside they recommend new engine
Why haven't the engine on Ebay got oil filler on the rocker cover?
Because it has the original type of breather system, not the modified one fitted to the unleaded fuel engines. It does sound as though it might be a better bet than trying to fix your old one though, unless you can find a later one, I think the Rover 216 engines were the unleaded version, but they aren't that common now either.
