  • Running hot

Hi I have a maestro 1.6 LX auto and runs quite hot (needle on 3/4) we have flushed the coolant system and changed the thermostat and it still is running hot even when idling. Any help or advice would be appreciated

Have you got an accurate means of checking the temperature? If it isn't really too hot it could be faulty temp sensor, ECU, or (unlikely but possible) gauge. Other things worth checking are blocked or corroded fins on radiator and that the water pump is pumping well (heater working well and rad hot all over implies that pump is ok). Is the cooling fan coming on? It has it's own thermal switch (rh rad ) and fuse, fans sometimes seize up..

After a proper look and a second opinion from my mate it's safe to say the rad is knackered fan kicks in as it should already replaced the thermostat and looking at the state of the rad and there is a slight leak from it. So now I need to find a radiator if you could point me in the right direction id appreciate it

As far as I remember 1600 radiators are not that easy to find, the early ones were a different size to the later ones and are the hardest to find, later ones come up on ebay sometimes. It might be worth trying to find a local radiator specialist, they may be able to recore it, or find a replacement.

A couple of 'proper people' that are worth trying ahead of ebay are https://www.xjrover.co.uk/ and https://bestofmgrover.co.uk/ . If all else fails you could use an MGF radiator (I think Jeff put a post on here about this). only problem with using it on a 1600 would be that you'd need to extend one of the hoses as the 1600 rad is a bit shorter... good luck John

Can you get it re-cored by a local radiator company? Think Brighton Radiators re-core from memory, Northern Radiators also do that but they're a bit far from Sussex

Im not sure of the part number as i dont have time to look it up but it might be GRD108/GRD983, best check, and Teeside has one in stock. It's for a Montego 1.6 but I don't know if they're different https://www.inracing.co.uk/teesdale-...e-catalogue-g/

GRD 983 is the right one for Maestro 1.6 from 1986 on, it is the same as the Montego, you did well to find that!

I can heartily recommend Northern Radiators in Leeds if it comes to that. They recored my Montego radiator and were very reasonable.
