Montego radio mismatch

Hello everyone, Please see photos of the car radio loom and the radio connections. Philips Radio XQD10002 as per spec (according to microfiche) for this model vis 1987 1.6L. There is mention in the microfiche for a link harness radio to main loom but have seen a picture of this harness (courtesy of Damen & Kroes) but it bears no resemblance to what's needed. I've looked at later model R570 Rover (made by Philips) radios but the connections are different. Earlier Philips models seem to be two speaker only. I have the 4 new speaker plugs that go unto the radio so i'm looking to find either a radio (or its model number) that just plugs in to the existing loom or a link harness for my XQD10002 which would have 4 bare wire ends to fit into the speaker plugs. Ignore the red wire in the picture this was to do with, i think, a radio in the boot. (taxi?). Any help appreciated. For info the radio that was in the car when i bought it was a Pioneer radio/cassette which came wit a rats nest of wiring into the main loom non of which is of any use here. Many thanks

That any good for you Arthur? Those I think are for a montego radio/cassette but you will have to splice into your existing as this harness was cut out many years ago

Yes that would help with the radio end. I'm also in conversation with an audio shop that i'm hoping will have the other end if not a whole link. If not i can cut off the existing loom sockets and splice it in. Not sure what's on the other end of your loom and whether that can be joined as is to my loom further back? Let me know cost. Maybe send with the other bit?

Call it an extra £5 Arthur the loom is quite long so trim as you need and I will put it together with the pipe

Doh! no i've got my brain into gear the "rats nest" of wiring that came out of my Montego has the connectors that fix into the car loom. They are the white ones in the picture. Now i have the radio end connectors courtesy of Jeff (see previous post) i can connect those to the white connectors in the picture. I've come to the conclusion (not withstanding the professional look of the car loom connectors) that the original Austin/Rover connectors were removed in order to connect the Pioneer outfit. The larger white connector is for the speakers and the smaller for permanent live, live and earth. Still learning.............

The speaker in the driver's door don't work. Lots of corrosion and it has been removed at some point. For now, I have just re-fitted it in a neater fashion.

The device itself is the original factory item, badged 'Rover'. I did happily play a cassette in it early on but very soon there seemed to be issues here and remembering "tape tangle" from my youth just left it.
The "station hunt" on the radio - works fine on the up & down arrows but if reception is lost en route it don't automatically search for a better station/reception.

I have the ICE handbook.......I'll take a look. No big deal, so long as I can drive to some tunes, as opposed to silence

The radio cassette in my 1988 1.6L auto should be (and is now) a Philips branded R570. The best thing i did when first getting (back) into Montegos was buying a set of microfiches and a display unit for them. It was very useful when searching or asking for parts. A lot of numbers have been superseded but the old number gives you a way in. The radio was in the days before Philips supplied Rover branded radios and radio cassettes of varying specs. Unfortunately, now i have all the wiring sorted thanks to Jeff supplying the correct loom fittings, my Philips R570 lights up but not much else other than a gentle hiss through the speakers. The display and button surrounds light up but nothing shown on the screen not even the code request. I know of a working example so I’m deciding whether to get mine fixed or just buy the working one from a reputable supplier which may be the way to go. The front speakers had, shall we say, had it; but managed to get some replicas off Ebay. Made easy by mine not needing the door capping mounted tweeter take offs. A E Wilcox had the correct speakers but when checking before sending noted they had disintegrated in the box. The later EEP93 speakers, with tweeter take off, seemed to last better but these are virtually unobtainable. For my speakers i had to remove the shroud (protects the speakers from water ingress above the speaker) from the old speakers and transfer to the new. More to follow once i get a working unit fitted. The rear speakers were "shot" as well but after 38 years in situ can't complain.

Front and rear speakers are freely available, all you need is the size. They don't have to be original as you don't see them. I replaced mine and my sons speakers with generic ones and all worked fine.
R570 radio cassettes are on ebay but you have to take the sellers word they work properly and have a code
R652 badged Rover has been put in on a later date so no Montego had Rover badged radios.
Neither radio searched for stations when being used unless to search up and down.

Thanks Jeff all good info. I thought my radios were original fitment in both my L reg's which have "Rover" on the cassette flap. The model number isn't shown on the either unit but on the pictures in my ICE handbooks for both cars it shows ROVER on the cassette flap and Philips on the actual radio. Neither of my units have Philips on them just Rover on the cassette flap or, as i say, the model number. Anything could have happened including upgrades later on. The Rover 213's and 216's were being produced at the same time as the latter Montegos; i wonder if there was some cross contamination between the two models radio wise?.Thanks for the info on the tweeters. I came across some a while ago which i purchased but would have to change the door cappings (and speakers now) on my 88 1.6L as there is no provision for them. I'd be interested in any link you have to the front door speakers with tweeter take off lugs as i didn't come across any on my searches. Perhaps i've not been looking in the right place -
