Screen wash - general

A separate post, the wiper parking now sorted -

I removed the pump for the WINDSCREEN wash, let the reservoir drain. A bit of gunk came out but nothing major. Ran a bit more clean water through the reservoir and no signs of blockage.
I replaced, reconnected the pump but still no screen wash reaching the screen. I do hear a whirring, the pump trying to work. Is the pump itself full of gunk I wonder. Looks like a replacement required anyway.

Just tried the rear wash wipe and all ok, even if the nozzle needs adjusting!

Are the pumps interchangeable? I could do a swap and source a pump for the rear more at my leisure if they are.

Interestingly, someone has placed a switch in the blanking plug, right of steering wheel, beneath the air vent. It has a rear screen wash symbol but seems to do nothing.

.......and, oh, the little white rotor in the pump rotated freely bur I was expecting to see more, something more protruding with small fins ??

There is just a small tag sticking out on the pump, the front and rear are interchangeable. If some gunk came out of the reservoir it may be a blockage in either nozzles, pipework or pump. If you open the lid on the reservoir, make sure that the non return valve hasn't been fitted to the front pump by mistake, then squirt water into the nozzles using a hose pipe ( no need to get a good seal onto the nozzle as it shouldn't take much pressure to clear) the water should start filling the reservoir. If they work ok after this, then job done, if they work for a while then stop again you'll need to clean all of the gunk out of the tank. The slime that was in mine seemed to be a fungus, using chlorinated tap water seemed to help keep it at bay. I also fitted an 'on the blade' nozzle from a DAF LF lorry, the clips weren't a perfect fit on the blade, so it was t glue on, but once I'd got it connected it did a good job of soaking the screen & the holes are a bit bigger than the original ones, so it has never blocked up. If you know, or get to know, anyone that uses an LF, you can get them for free as the new blades come with a new nozzle, so old ones just get thrown in the bin when blades are changed.

You should be able to hear the motor working when you press the washer button. If not sure follow the pipes to the Y piece and disconnect there and again press the washer button. If not working change the motor, If working follow the pipes through to the non return valve. The black disc with a pipe in and out, disconnect before that and try again with the washer button. If you connect back up and remove the out pipe try again, If still working remove the pipes under the squirters and try again, if still working your squirters are blocked internally.

I'll do more later, better do some work!!

But, I was getting a wheel rim skimmed on my MG6 at 8:01 and nipped by my Mum's to get some sewing needles better suited to clearing, adjusting the nozzles

I suppose to fit the new nozzles the wiper arms will have to come off again - otherwise I can't fully remove the plastic trim at base of screen. I was thinking of doing this anyway to investigate possible blockages in the pipes where they join the nozzles.

Yeah you will need to do that to get under them from memory, but you know how to do that now. Replied and will post on

Jeff, the nozzles arrived yesterday and I fitted them just now before I start work - I now have powerful jests of spay/wash across my screen. Brilliant, "Morris Montego" is coming along just fine!

Yes, the car is ready - I had just been avoiding longer journeys until the screen wash and wing mirrors were both sorted.

I am very keen to attend some shows before summer is over. Even some very small events, meet ups with Club members.
