  • [Wanted] ADU8479 ECU

Hi everyone. My MG Turbo has an AFU9335 ignition ECU fitted which is not right and after lists of part swapping I think in need this to get it running right.

I’m told I need an ADU8479. I’m really struggling to find one and the usual routes are exhausted!

Does anyone know of anyone with one please who might be willing to sell… working or not… as there is a firm which will restore them but they need a unit to work on.

All help gratefully received. I’m a bit stuck.

    Matthew

Hi Pete. Under guidance of Vinny I’ve sourced an ADU9336 which I’m told can used as a substitute. However, if you do stumble across an ADU8479 I’m still interested!

ADU9336 from memory is for an injection car, not turbo Mat so no difference to what you already have so Vinny is in error I'm afraid. I've put up two links for you on your other thread and another this morning so you might want to look at those and get back to me as no comment as yet to whether those are any good for you. So I may as well stop looking

Hi Jeff. That’s a shame. I followed the links you kindly sent. Sadly after repeat contact the Polish firm wouldn’t ship. The U.K. firm looked promising then they looked at one they had in stock which I was asking them to get sorted for me, and they apologised and said the innards were not of an 8479 despite the box. So I’m stuck again.

When I got the car the air temp sensor was bridged, a non standard filter was fitted, wrong ECU (9335 which may be for a carb 2.0?) and I suspect they had a failed ECU they swapped for what they could get and just messed with everything to get it to work, albeit not well! It’s not far off back to standard now.

            Again - all help welcomed!

Right - I’ve managed to buy the one for sale on eBay in Spain. They wouldn’t post to the U.K. so I’m sending it to my cousin in Germany who will then send it to me. He’s the only one I know in mainland Europe! So thanks for the tip off Jeff. Let’s hope it survives the post! Even if it’s not working that other company may be able to restore it. Matthew

You need an original to to get it rebuilt? Either that or re-mapped I assume with the car there on a rolling road? No idea if it's arrived yet as Matt hasn't up dated anything

ECU arrived safely and I fitted it to the car yesterday. Car, as before, got up to temperature on the drive fine. Fan kicked in, tickover went wobbly and engine died, wouldn’t restart. 3rd ECU (9335, 9346, 8479) same issue. Took the opportunity to test fuel pressure at carb after it conked and it was 4psi so that seems fine.

Very strange issue. Battery is new and when running it’s showing charge at 14.3v so hopefully the alternator is ok. Planning on checking spark with spark tester after it conks out to see if it’s weakened off. Baffling, frankly.

Try the rotor arm as they're known to fail, but as usual if no spark. Start and plugs and work backwards.

Thanks Jeff. When it’s dry out there I’ll go and see how the spark is when it’s warm. I need to see if the fan kicking in affects the spark or if this is coincidental timing and it’s a component warming up and failing that’s the issue e.g. the coil. The rotor arm and distributor cap were new when we did the head gasket so I hope they are ok but can easily check or replace again. The car did initially run after the head gasket with the new rotor/cap. After that I had the failed regulator diaphragm and after that resolved it stalling when you revved it, we have these other curious issues! It’s a real puzzle. I did a list of the checks and changes for a pal who is helping me. It’s ridiculously long!

With the right ECU the car is pretty much back to factory standard and now without any bodgery. It’s got to be a simple fix now. Just need to find the problem.

If you have a spark then can you hear the fuel pump priming etc? If you do have a spark then you could try removing the plenum and pouring a little fuel into the back of the carb to see if it fires up.
If its starts from cold it could mean under load its conking out, you may have air getting in the system somewhere or the carb isn't set up correctly so starved of fuel

Yes, that sounds a good idea. I’d assumed as the pump was delivering the 4psi it would be ok but that sounds worth a check. Vinny set the carb to factory settings so we knew it would need a rolling road tube as the car has done 90,000 miles.

I’ve previously used carb cleaner to check for leaks but I’ve had bits on and off since so it would be a wise re-check as you suggest
