Nah, I'm not buying that. You're telling me that if someone with loads of money and and a police-car fetish offered you £10k for your old Maestro (=the price of a good-spec ZR) that you wouldn't snatch his hand off? How long have you had the car? It's not something you've "grown up" with and has huge sentimental value say because it was a (deceased) familiy member's car, because it's ex-Lancs police!

What is it with some people? Anyone offered me a brand new ZR for my Maestro I'd throw the other one in for free as well. And a garage load of spares.

T16 the Zed, and if its not to requirments (which I doubt) then sell it, buy 2 (or even 4) Maestro's and still have spare cash left.

It was her first car so yes it holds sentimental value and I sort of grew up with it as it was my parents car before I gave it to her for her 21st Birthday.

If I had a 1.3 maestro I'd swap it for a packet of crisps.

Seems a bit overpriced for me  .

Isn't this useful thread going off topic?

Not always, Stew. They are sometimes kept on topic for us when we stray.

Going almost back on topic, back when I was 17 I was given a G reg Yugo 45, which was literally just about capable of pulling it's own weight, such was its immense power. Afer a quick ring round the insurance companies, it transpired that the car wouldn't be staying long, as the cheapest quote I could get was £1500, which on a car that is free is not even worth contemplating! However, I did note back then that sometimes it actually works out cheaper if you insure a car fully comp than TPFT, I can'e even begin to offer an explaination as to why, but the quote on the Yugo was fully comp, TPFT didn't come below £2000..... I can fully believe the prices you have been quoted Steve, as the Yugo was group 4, and the Maestro is group 7 IIRC.....
And Linds, I can fully understand your point about swapping, no amount of money can ever replace sentiment, if that car means something to you it's replacement will struggle to live up to it, i've been there many many times, most recently with my MG1600, on the face of it that car is the most unreliable untrustworthy piece of junk I have ever owned, having done about 300 miles in the last 2 and a half years, but there is something that keeps me coming back to it, I know I did have a half hearted attempt to sell it last year, but now I have permanent storage for it that is a forgotten matter entirely! The only thing I would have possibly swapped that for would have been a 2.0i, but now we have one of them theres no need! Happy days.....

                            Ricky.

Had one of those! 1988 Yugo 45A - I was insured as a named driver on my mum's policy for £200 when I was 17 - that was on top of her premuium of about £80. Bought from new for £3000 sold after 10 years for £300 - not bad

Keep the faith, Ricky, keep the faith! I've done more mileage than that in mine in the last 2 and half weeks. Went to Wimbledon to see the greyhound racing in it last night... from Bristol - about 240 miles round trip - no sweat.

The only hiccup was when we almost got stopped by the police - I was doing about 65mph in the left-hand lane. It was about 1am and a police car pulled alongside me and shone a torch in at us, then sped off! The only thing we could think of is that they probably don't see many 21 year old Maestros on the M4 at 1 o'clock in the morning! (Seriously off-topic bit)

Don't worry, Matthew, I'm not losing the faith in a hurry, the MG and I have come too far together for that - I've never owned a car this long! With the virtual rear end rebuild, and the engine/box change that we have done already, I think a little bit of paint and a few tweaks are nothing really! There are parts of me that wishes it was a lot easier, but, alas, such is life.....!
I have to admit though, for a car that is apparently stolen a lot, the police don't really seem bothered by it, which is more than I can say for the mark 4 Escort I used to have, in which I was pulled over three times in as many months! Their excuse was that "it is the sort of car that gets stolen", to which I would reply "I wish someone would steal it!"

Still, no need to worry, faith all here, present and correct!

                                Ricky.

P.S. Matthew - don't think the police were trying to get a glimpse of the digi-dash perhaps?
