  • 1995 Rover Maestro 700L Van (M775 OAN)

This is my recently purchased ex AA patrol van, it has a surprisingly good body needing only minor repairs.

The previous owner has upgraded it to the Turbo version of the Perkins diesel engine, also upgrading the turbo charger, injectors and intercooler. This is one fast van!

It is smoking like i have never seen before though, i think the turbo seals are shot.

Should be on the road in due course.

Is the smoke black or blue? Black is too much fuel / not enough air.

    Blue is oil.

    Grey is fuel

What injectors/intercooler/turbo is it running as it is unusual to see a tweaked prima these days. I miss mine sometimes!

Very very thick dense black smoke.

I will have to check precisely with my friend i bought it from, i am sure he mentioned Sierra Cosworth/Saab parts.....

I will post pictures when i get a chance.

I hope not, it has a boost gauge fitted which is giving a reading and you can hear it spooling.

If it is tweaked it will smoke more. No smoke - No Poke

I'd double check for boost leaks. Black smoke means unburnt fuel. If he's tweaked the fueling and the turbo then you should have some smoke, but not necessarily loads.

Ben who i bought it from said something along the lines of it must be the turbo seals because when he took an intercooler pipe off it had loads of **** in it?

Where is the best place to start?

I haven't had a chance to touch the van since i got it as it is stored elsewhere, i am going to be moving it to home over the Christmas period so i can actually set to sorting it out and getting it on the road.

Thanks for all your help/input guys.

The intercooler will always have some oil mist residue in it. It shouldn't be half full of oil though! (You'd know if it was as the engine would run away with itself)

Attached are some pictures of the setup.

I got it running in daylight today and it dripped loads of what appeared to be thick black oil out of the exhaust, does this mean the turbo seals as my friend diagnosed? ?

Need this on the road asap and unsure where to start...
