Started the car up and testing the brakes as the rear pipes look a bit crusty and the rear offside pipe burst so I will change all those

Couldn't find my pipe benders anywhere so had to buy another one, not best pleased and bought this as it should sort the small bends etc needed https://www.zoro.co.uk/shop/tools-an...4e3bfb73fcfefe
so I put the dash back in and took it out on that. Also put the drivers seat back in or I can't pump the brakes properly when I need to1958 Ford Consul Convertible. I love this car

Had a couple of hours spare today to continue with the car. Replaced the temp sensor but no difference so replaced the throttle body with one I bought off Chris as I was convinced the one on the car had some sort of fault due to the poor starting and the car starts on the button each time now. So that's done once and for all, well hopefully as the car has had many problems
Next was to replace the rad with the MGF one I bought for it as the temperature gauge goes up too quickly, the old rad was blocked so hopefully I've sorted that once I replace the thermostat, I'm sure I've already done that when I did the head gasket but it was a long time ago now so couldn't remember1958 Ford Consul Convertible. Put a new thermostat on the car and started it up, now starts on the button but noticed a lot of smoke coming out of the back, removed the breather pipe and that was clogged up, also poked a screwdriver into the sump breather and that was also blocked, now runs smoother but still has a lot of smoke coming out the exhaust. Compression test next and if confirmed the rings are gone I will put the interior back into the car and Chris will sell it as a project. It may also be that the sump breather is still blocked so will also look at that after the test. I hadn't noticed any smoke before but there again I hadn't revved it much.
The temp gauge goes up to 3/4 after turning the ignition on so I didn't manage to cure that either1958 Ford Consul Convertible. I love this car

It's a shame really as it moved on it's own steam for the first time since Chris got it1958 Ford Consul Convertible. I love this car

Change the ignition ecu and no change with the temp gauge, from memory that's controlled by the fuel ecu but could be wrong as I'm forgetting things these days, been a long time and atm I can't find a spare, did have a couple but I remember giving one to Ray awhile ago. Changed the breather and lots of rust came out, also changed the oil and filter as the oil wasn't the best and with the rusty breather could have lots of bits in it and I have plenty of both so didn't cost anything
Removed the plugs and all are very sooty but not wet with oil so maybe the injectors are also not as free flowing as they should be. After the sealant has gone off on the breather and I have put oil in it I will check the compression, all's not lost yet and I don't remember it smoking like this when I finally got it running in september last yearLast edited by Jeff Turbo; 13th April 2025, 10:48.1958 Ford Consul Convertible. The issue is on this bore, it's clean with no soot at all as is the head with no compression also on that bore. The others are between 110 and 115 but this one is 20,so I removed the head and stripped it down to be skimmed. I will also change the stem seals as I have plenty of those and clean up the valves. I will also clean out all the injectors with my cleaner.
I'm not too sure why this is happening to be honest and has anyone got any ideas?
Can only be either the head not sealed, something wrong with the valves, maybe a bent one as the cam belt was a few teeth out when we got the car, or a piston ring but I would have thought if it was a ring all would be covered in oil unless it's a compression ring?
I left the coolant in all the bores and nothing leaked down then moved all to the top and not a lot of movement in the pistons so I'm running out of ideasLast edited by Jeff Turbo; 14th April 2025, 12:46.1958 Ford Consul Convertible. I love this car

If you take the cam off to close all the valves (or turn it put suspect valves closed) then put some diesel or degreaser into the ports you should see if it dribbles out of a dodgy valve. I guess water would do the job if you want less mess, but water generally doesn't find its way out as well as diesel/gunk. I'm guessing that there is no sign of naughtyness in the bore?

I've cleaned up all the valves etc and found the head gasket set I had left including new stem seals so after I've dropped the head off I can look more at the bores, they didn't look scored or anything but will get time later in the week1958 Ford Consul Convertible. I love this car
